Meaning

PHP is an open source, general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited to web development, and its name stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor. Rasmus Lerdorf began it in 1994 as a set of tools called Personal Home Page Tools, which is the older meaning of the letters. PHP code runs on the server and sends the result to the browser, so visitors see output such as HTML or JSON, never your instructions.
