Originally PHP stood for Personal Home Page. The PHP manual says Rasmus Lerdorf created the first version in 1994 as a set of CGI programs, first used to track visits to his online resume, and called the suite Personal Home Page Tools. When Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski rewrote the parser, the language was renamed simply PHP, and the letters became the recursive acronym PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor that is used today. It is useful to know both meanings.
